The Washington National Guard was created on December 16, 1907, as a result of the creation of the Department of Defense. The Guardsmen were initially stationed at Fort Stevens in Tacoma and then at Fort Lewis in Olympia. On February 14, 1912, the Guardsmen were transferred to Shoreline. At that time, they were headquartered at Ft. Lawton in Lynden Heights. The first national guard gift was given to the Guardsmen on October 1, 1912 by Rear Admiral John A. MacKenzie with a machine gun and ammunition. The gift was in honor of Captain George Vachon who had been killed in action during World War I. The first national guard unit to be deployed to war was composed of guardsmen from Shoreline and Lynden Heights units which served with distinction during World War II under Lieutenant General James Doolittle's command as part of Operation Neptune's Spear. Since its inception, the Washington National Guard has played an important role in both domestic and international conflicts including two world wars (1914-1945), Korea (1950-1953), Vietnam (1975-1986), Desert Storm/Operation Iraqi Freedom (1991-1992), Operation Hurricane Ridge (1995), Kosovo (1999), Afghanistan (2001-2002) and Iraq 2003-2004; deployments to Bosnia Herzegovina 2000; Haiti 2005; Cyprus 2006; Latvia 2007; Spain 2008; Portugal 2009; Norway 2010; Georgia 2011; British Columbia 2012-2013 In addition to its deployment overseas, members have also served domestically throughout Washington state conducting various duties such as ceremonial functions such as groundbreaking for new state facilities or participating in parades or funerals for state officials

The original shorelines along Puget Sound were formed when glaciation started to retreat over thousands of years ago. Ancient glaciers carved out valleys and ridges that are still visible today on many hills and mountains nearshore. Today's shorelines were created when windblown sand and gravel blown over long distances by the waves deposited their loads in small areas over time. This process left some large wharves that can be seen today all along Puget Sound's coastal region from White Pass down to Gig Harbor One example of an ancient shoreline is the Whidbey Island Lighthouse which can be found just south of Olympia on Whidbey Island highway #1A (or simply "Island Highway 1"). Built in 1846 by American Commodore James Cook during his final voyage around Northwest America as part of his circumnavigation Expedition under Admiral Bligh, this lighthouse served as a warning beacon for sailors departing from Discovery Bay on Vancouver Island until it was replaced by modern lighthouses in 1906 following completion of new construction at nearby Langara Point lighthouse . Another ancient shoreline can be found near Anacortes at Islay Head Light which dates back to 1792 when Captain John Fraser erected this light here due to navigation problems caused by shoals off Dungeness Peninsula . The present-day lighthouse was built between 1912 and 1915 following design provided by naval architect Captains Alfred Vail and Harry Cushing .
