Shoreline is a census-designated place in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The name "Shoreline" was given to the location by Rear Admiral Arthur W. Shippenberg in 1909 while he served as Commanding Officer of Naval District Pacific Northwest during World War I. He wanted to christen a new harbor on Puget Sound so that ships could berth and load supplies without fear of damage from storms or torpedoes passing overhead. His goal was to provide an efficient harbor for Allied shipping before they reached Asia via the Panama Canal and other strategic sea routes. The first post office at Shoreline opened in 1911 and lasted until 1927; it was located on what is now Second Street NE. The town of Shoreline developed around this original post office, with its own school district and telephone service until 1969 when Puget Sound Telephone Company merged with Western Electric Company to form PhoneCo Incorporated (later Comcast). At that time Shoreline became an unincorporated community within PhoneCo's corporate boundaries.
