The 1st Lt. George A. Palfrey, USAF (Ret) was an airman who served in the Shoreline area during World War II. He was a recipient of the United States Air Force's highest decoration - the Distinguished Flying Cross - for his participation in an aerial battle against Japanese forces on December 8, 1941.
Shoreline is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,835 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. The name "Shoreline" was chosen by Captain George Vancouver when he and his men first sighted the Strait of Juan de Fuca in 1792. He named it Point Defiance after his naval leader, Rear Admiral John Woolridge, who had convoyed them through that strait on their return from a Northwest Passage voyage in 1801. The town's earliest settlers were fishermen who built their first homes along Puget Sound's eastern shoreline in the early 1800s. By 1840, Shoreline had become an agricultural community with many small farmers and their families living on fields and dockside ponds west of downtown. In 1851, Shoreline voters approved a land grant to James Crouse for the purpose of developing what became known as Crouse Heights east of downtown. The grant allowed for farming and ranching operations; this led to development of much of Shoreline's later commercial and industrial history. In 1912, Mayor Jepson proposed annexing Shoreline to Seattle so that its citizens would have easier access to city services; however, this proposal was defeated by referendum. During World War II, Shorelines military garrison served as storage depot for munitions near Port Townsend before being transferred tomittently south of the city limits in 1949 due to housing shortages within Seattle proper following suburban growth thereupon; eventually both posts were closed down completely as air-raid shelters during the war years while Tacoma operated an RAF base nearby until 1959.] A new shopping center called HarborCenter opened in 1984 near Tacoma airport which replaced an earlier retail complex built on former Navy station land adjacent to Tacoma port facilities now used by Microsoft Redmond.[Cascade Mall] The old Naval Station site became home again starting around 1990 when Boeing began operations at its latest facility there – 777 Aviation Manufacturing Center (now Everett Paine Field) ]. Shoreline is a census-designated place in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The first permanent settlement in what is now Shoreline was made on the site of present-day Camp Butler by members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1805. George Vancouver explored Puget Sound in 1792 and named it "Northwest coast of Juan de Fuca" after his navigator, Juan de Fuca. The first European to see and name Puget Sound was Captain James Cook in 1795 while on his final voyage around Asia. Cook named the sound "Puget Sound" for John William Conte, Secretary at War under George Washington during the Northwest Ordinance Period (1792 - 1847). Shoreline developed as a small town along Puget Sound until World War II when it became an important naval base with over 60% of Kitsap County's workforce employed there during that time period. In 1951, Shoreline became home to Naval Air Station Whidbey Island which served both Fleet Air Arm attack planes and Navy submarines; later this facility was transferred to Joint Base Lewis-McChord located adjacent to Tacoma and renamed Naval Air Station Tacoma before its closure in 2007. In 1984, Shoreline hosted the world's largest water balloon launch using helium from Lake Union Torrey Pines National Monument when more than 100 people participated from throughout North America including Canada and Bermuda . In 2002, Shoreline celebrated its centennial anniversary with events such as a parade through downtown streets and a picnic/fest near Pier 21 on Discovery Way.
