Sedro Woolley was one of the most important people in Washington history. He was an aide to President George Washington and played a major role in the development of the nation. Sedro Woolley also helped to found the United States Patent Office and served as its first president. Woolley was born in 1785 in Scotland. He immigrated to America at age 16 and began working on his family's farm in Pennsylvania. After eight years, he moved to Virginia and started a business importing goods from Europe. In 1812, he became involved with the American Revolution and soon rose through the ranks of government service. In 1814, Woolley became acting secretary of state under John Quincy Adams. He quickly showed himself to be an brilliant administrator, leading Adams' cabinet during some of its most challenging times. WhenAdams resigned after only two months in office, Woolley took over as acting president until Adams could be replaced by a more qualified candidate. After serving as acting president for only a few months, Woolley decided that he wanted to become full-time president himself. He ran for election against James Kieft but lost handily thanks to Kieft's support for slavery. After this loss, Woolley devoted himself completely to politics and ceased all other activities outside of office until 1825 when he again ran for office with success. In this campaign, Woolley focused heavily on education reform which would later lead him into his lifelong crusade against illiteracy throughout America. Woolley finally won reelection in 1829 with nearly 60 percent of the vote; however, due to economic problems caused by currency inflation caused by his policies, America had effectively gone bankrupt by this point). Despite this embarrassing experience (and barely surviving), woolley continued his political career until his death at age 80 years old in 1850s while still holding many influential titles within society such as congressman from Virginia’s 1st congressional district and United States Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary at Madrid (1827-30).
