There has been a significant airforce gift history in Sedro Woolley, Washington. The Sedro Woolley Air Force Base was originally built in 1941 as the Boeing Aircraft Company's experimental production facility for the development of the B-17 Flying Fortress Bomber. It was during World War II that Boeing first imported aircraft from Seattle and started production at the base. The Sedro Woolley Air Force Base played an important role during both World Wars I and II. It was also home to the Pacific Northwest Aero Club which helped develop aviation in this region. The base also hosted various types of training flights for fighter pilots and bomber pilots. In 1945, the base became part of when Boeing merged with other companies to form United Aircraft Corporation (UAC). UAC continued to operate Sedro Woolley Air Force Base until it closed in 1992. Since its closure, many pieces of Sedro Woolley's air force gift history have been preserved and are now on display at various locations within town. One such piece is the now defunct Boeing Aircraft Company Hangar which is located on down Main Street in town. This hangar served as a storage and production facility for many years before it was turned into a museum dedicated to Sedro Woolley's air force gift history in 2001. Additionally, several other buildings within town have also been preserved as part of this history including: "Eagle" Hall which once housed administrative offices for UAC; "Hangar 1" which served as a manufacturing plant for bombers during World War II; "Hangar 2" which housed fighter planes during World War II; and "Boeing Annex" which housed office space for UAC engineers prior to their merger with Lockheed Martin Corporation in 1984.
The United States Air Force has a long and proud history of providing humanitarian assistance to the people of various countries. In recent years, the airforce has become increasingly involved in disaster relief efforts, most notably through Operation Crossroads. This operation provides support to local refugee camps in central Iraq, helping to integrate displaced Iraqis into their new surroundings. The airforce is also involved in numerous other humanitarian initiatives, both inside and outside of America. Operation Crossroads began on November 3rd, 2008 and lasted for three weeks. During that time, over 100 Boeing 727 aircraft were used to transport food and water supplies to Iraqi refugees living in tents near Kirkuk. The air force also flew medical supplies and personnel back and forth between Baghdad and Kirkuk. All of this was done with the help of local airlines who offered their services at very low fares. This type of effort is not without its challenges; for one thing, it requires a large number of airplanes which can only be used during specific times periods. Additionally, many refugees are already traumatized by the events that took place during the war in Iraq. To date, however, Crossroads has been a smashing success; it has helped provide much-needed comfort to thousands of people who have suffered greatly from violence or persecution.
