Sammamish is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area and the Puget Sound metropolitan area. Sammamish is located on the southern bank of Lake Sammamish. The first European to visit what is now Sammamish was Captain James Cook on his third voyage in 1792-93. Cook named the remote spot "Emmalax" after his assistant Lieutenant John Emmaline Donnelly who had accompanied him during that cruise. In 1802, while exploring Puget Sound near present day Issaquah, Washington along with Lieutenant George Vancouver, they observed high mountains on their left hand side and were led to believe they were sighting Mount Rainier which they reached two days later. In 1851, land purchases by Governor Scipio Mudge made Sammamish one of the towns chartered in King County under provisions of Article I Section 9 of the state Constitution. On May 15th, 1852 whenSammamish's first store opened for business it was one of only three stores in King County open for retail trade during those early years thanks to a program called "The Open Door." In 1862 Henry Wroten built a dam across Beaver Creek which created Lake Sammamish and caused some flooding that destroyed most homes east of Beavers Road including many owned by pioneer settlers like Nelsons and Meads who had relocated from Western Canada earlier that year due to heavy rains associated with anEl Niño event that summer. That same year saw construction begin on what would become Capitol Hill Park as part of efforts by then Mayor Edward Smith to improve civic amenities around town following concerns about its inadequate facilities at time being located near agricultural land used for grazing livestock towards Puget Sound Naval Shipyard just south of town center where shipbuilding operations were taking place at full capacity as well as other commercial enterprises impacting quality of life around town center including nearbyIssaquah Heavy Industries Company (IHIC) until it closed its doors in 1965 following decades struggling with low sales despite numerous investment opportunities flowing into downtown sammamish from outside sources while still maintaining significant occupancy levels within IHIC property until 2005 when development commenced adjacent thereto resulting in loss or abandonment/ demolition/ replacement/ expansion off Center Way northward beyond what existed before making way for luxury housing developments currently comprising much acreage formerly occupied by IHIC property prior thereto as well as extensive redevelopment going forward since then even extending several blocks further eastward along Center Way northeast boundary thereby providing ample opportunity for new commerical activity without encroaching upon former industrial sites currently containing large portions remaining abandoned or lost sight thereof over intervening distance making such redevelopment possible whereas previous attempts by city officials to re-establish commerce within limits adjacent thereto have failed primarily because there has been no real effort underway by developers to take advantage available site resourcesainely adjoining protected areas rather than viewing such endeavors merely as second best alternatives

Sammamish is an unincorporated community inKing County, Washington, United States. The community is located on the south bank of the Sammamish River. It is about two miles east of the city of Olympia and three miles west of the town of Wenatchee. The first people to settle in what is now Sammamish were Indians, most likely the Kootenai Tribe. A post office was established at Sammamish in 1853, and remained in operation until 1961. The community name derived from a Native American word meaning "meadow where we gather spruce." A sawmill was built near present-day Sammamish around 1875 by John Stephenson and his brother George Stephenson. The mill closed down around 1910 but reopened in 1925 as a vegetable production factory with a capacity of 50 metric tons per day. In 1951, it became a part of Pacific Northwest Paper Corporation before closing again in 1969. A small shopping center was built next to the old paper mill on State Route 2B in 1971. It became inactive until it was purchased by Pacific Northwest Foods Inc., which renamed it after its founder Bill Gates during its merger with Safeway Incorporated in 1984. At that time, it contained several stores including Barnes & Noble bookstore chain and JCPenney department store chain among others The shopping center continued to be used as an industrial park until it was sold to Microsoft for $315 million in 1999 In 2003, Microsoft announced plans to demolish all but one building from its original campus (the large blue structure on NE 35th Street) and build anew just east of town using proceeds from leases for land acquired from other businesses withinSammamish limits as well as money raised through private contributions After much public outcry over the proposed development, Microsoft dropped its plans for the East Campus shortly thereafter; however, some remaining buildings still stand today
