Renton is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. At one time it was one of the most populous cities in Western Washington and its industries included shipbuilding and printing mills. The first permanent white settlers in Renton were people from British Columbia who arrived on a vessel called "Eagle" in 1853. The first store opened in 1854, and by 1860 there were 11 businesses operating in the town. In 1865, George Washington Puget had an idea to build a wharf to store ships at night so that he could get them out of port for shipment across Puget Sound during the day. This project became known as "Puget Harbor". In 1872, when Portland, Oregon became a state, Renton became part of King County under then-Governor Isaac Stevens' bill creating county lines around Seattle and Olympia. The first shops opened up here too - including one run by brothers Cyrus Ives (c1810-1892) and John C Wright (1824-1900). They started making hats and selling them door to door with their wagonloads of flour bought back from farmers along the way. A mill was built soon after on First Avenue West near what is now International Boulevard - named after Augustus De Witt Carver (1796-1857), who also founded Yakima Valley Academy which still operates today as a private school within King County public schools system. Renton, Washington is a small city in the Okanogan County seat of Canby. The population was 1,944 at the 2010 census. It lies on the banks of the Snake River and is adjacent to North Bend and Cheney. The first Europeans to visit Renton were fur traders from Russia in 1807. In 1832, John McLaughlin founded what became Renton as an agricultural town after purchasing land from his father-in-law Allan Cameron. The town was named for Lieutenant Colonel George Vancouver, who explored British Columbia in 1792-93 and named all the rivers near present day Renton "Cameron" rivers after him. The first post office was established in 1835; it was renamed Canby in 1859 due to postal service problems with Renton being twice as large as Canby. In 1888, lumber baron Jens Gustav Jensen acquired 640 acres (253 hectares) northeast of town and began construction of a sawmill that would remain one of the largest in Northwest America until it closed down in 1913. In 1907, Japanese Americans were moved into townships east of Wenatchee during World War II; they were later forced out when the war ended and their homes were destroyed by firewood theft by civilian residents. After World War II, many Japanese Americans returned to their homes within Renton limits but some chose not to live there again because of its then high crime rates; however, this has gradually tapered off over time Renton's economy grew rapidly following World War II thanks to Boeing's development of military jets for United States Armed Forces use throughout Southeast Asia; thereafter production shifted away from aviation but continued until 1987 at nearby Grumman Aircraft Company's major plant south of town.
