Renton is a city in King County, Washington. The population was 17,865 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of King County and home to many high-tech companies. The city is located on Puget Sound and is bordered by Bellevue to the east, Issaquah to the south, Redmond to the west, and Seattle to the north. The first permanent European settlers in what would become Renton arrived in 1851 when shipwright James Reimer landed at nearby Belle Isle after sailing from Tacoma. A year later, Reimer's brother-in-law John Matson founded Matson & Co., one of earlySeattle businesses. In 1854, George Wright founded Wright Bros., an agricultural grocer and lumber dealer that became one of Seattle's leading businesses. By 1860, Renton had a population of 100 residents. In 1870s entrepreneur James Sweeney built what would become known as Sweeney House (now part of University Place) on land he purchased near present day Southcenter Mall. Sweeney startedochewing paper products including ballots for Seattle's first election in 1871 and served as mayor of Seattle from 1879 until his death in 1886. After his death, his widow developed what is now Southcenter Mall into an enclosed shopping center with anchor stores such as Sears Roebuck and JCPenney around 1930s when it was originally called Southcenter Plaza before being renamed Macy's Christmasland following retailer Macy's acquisition of Sears Holdings Corporation.. In 1907 Union Pacific Railroad donated land for a new station on Lake Washington Boulevard which served as Renton's primary commercial center until 1962 when Union Station closed down due to financial troubles.. After years of planning by Mayor Norm Rice (1959-1965), construction began on SR 99/Downtown Link Road which connected downtown with SR 520/Lake Washington Boulevard eastward This retail corridor would eventually become known as Pioneer Square today Shoreline Drive enters town along Preston Street past Yesler Way before rejoining Lake Washington Boulevard just past First Avenue SE In 1976 voters approved Measure 9 which provided funding for transportation projects throughout King County including funds for DowntownLink Road project which connected downtown withSR 520/Lake Washington Blvd eastward Shepherds Landing Harbor was completed in 1978 followed by Ballard Bridge overSounder River in 1980 connecting Ballard with Lynnwood via I-5 then Interstate 5 southbound before returning back acrosssounder river into town limits

Renton, Washington is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 24,402 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of King County and home to the Microsoft Redmond campus. The name "Renton" is an anglicized version of the Native American word "Redoubt." The first European settler in what is now Renton was George Vancouver in 1846. After his explorations of Puget Sound and Lake Washington he identified a location on Seattle's west side that would become Renton. He named it after himself and built a cabin there with his family in 1850. A post office called Redoubt was established at this location in 1851, and until 1863 it functioned as part of Tacoma. In 1864 Seattle moved its municipal government from Tacoma to KING (then simply Territorial) territory under the leadership of Mayor George Stephenson. At this time Redoubt became Seattle's first incorporated town. In 1865 John Jacob Astor founded the Fruit Company on land he had acquired near present-day Bellevue in Bellevue Bayou east of downtown Renton for $2 million dollars (). Astor donated 10 percent of his ownership interest toSeattle General Hospital (), which still bears his name today (). From that point forward Redoubt served as both commercial center and hospital site for Seattleites while Bellevue developed into a streetcar suburb beyond the reach of either development or contamination by Whiteflight residents moving out into central Ballard neighborhoods during Prohibition era Gentrification days across Northwest Side streets (the last such example being Des Plaines Avenue South).
