Redmond is a city in King County, Washington, United States. Redmond's population was 67,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The city is home to Microsoft and other technology companies. The name Redmond comes from "redemption," meaning "the taking away of taxes." The first settlement in what would become Redmond was made on the east side of Lake Of The Woods by John Nordstrom in 1847 as a result of land grants received from King County for his work on the Cascade Range.[1] He named it North Bend because he found that there were no bends in the river there. The town grew quickly and by 1857 had a post office, hotel, and school. In 1861, 5 miles (8 km) northeast of Redmond along I-5 was founded Bellevue with its own post office and two stores. By 1865 Bellevue had a population of 10 people and an academy teaching elementary and high school education while also providing transportation to nearby towns like Seattle. In 1868, when Puget Sound Bridge opened between Seattle and Bellevue, Redmond became one of the first places near Seattleites could go for their morning commute to work on ferries across Puget Sound. It wasn't until 1907 that buses began service to Redmond from downtownSeattlealthough streetcar service did exist before then).
