There are many different branches of the military that can be found in Redmond, Washington. The Army is one of them. This branch has a long history in this city and throughout the nation. In 1861, when Washington was divided into three regions, the Army was placed in charge of Redmond. This area was then called Fort Snelling after General Snelling who had commanded the army during the Mexican-American War. Redmond was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. They named their settlement after Chief Seattle who had helped lead their resistance against Spanish settlers in north Puget Sound area. The first European to visit this area was Captain James Cook in 1792 while on his way from Asia to England. He named this part of Puget Sound “Island Royale” and reported finding fertile land there which he thought would be ideal for planting crops and raising livestock. The first European settler in what is now Redmond was George Reed who built a log cabin oncurrent site of present day Pioneer Square on April 14, 1847. He came from Rhode Island and started a fur trading business here with his brother John Reed Sr.. The first post office here was established on May 4, 1853 under the name Indianola (later renamed Wenatchee). In 1865, when Wenatchee became an incorporated town, it changed its name to Redmond to reflect its new location within our city limits at 84th Ave NE & Snoqualmie Blvd NE

Redmond was founded on December 14, 1851 by William Redmond and his wife Catharine. It is the oldest city in Washington State and the second largest city in the Puget Sound region after Seattle. The population of Redmond in 1990 was over 150,000 people. Redmond is home to Microsoft Corporation, one of North America's leading technology companies, as well as other major businesses like Boeing Company and Starbucks Coffee Co. Redmond has a rich history that can be traced back to its founding fathers. William Redmond came from a Presbyterian background and he decided to create a town which would embody his values of democracy, education, and opportunity for all individuals. Catharine also had a strong interest in education and she helped to establish the first school in what is now Redmond. In 1851, they moved into their current location on Denny Way near Snohomish County Stadium. The Redmonds were able to provide for their family with land and money given to them by local leaders so that they could start a new community where everyone could have an equal opportunity to succeed. Over time, the Redmonds grew their community by creating businesses such as groceries store Northwest Grocery (later known as Safeway), feed store Northwest Feed & Seed (later known as King Soopers), lumberyard Northwest Lumber & Hardware (later known as Western Pulp Paper),and more! They also developeda number of parks including Lake Union Park which today houses many popular attractions like Microsoft's campus; Pioneer Square; Roosevelt High School; YMCA/YWCA; Bellevue Mall; St James United Methodist Church;; Queen Anne's Park; and much more! Today, there are over 150 streets named after ancestors who lived or worked in Redmond- it's truly an amazing legacy!
