Puyallup is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 7,568 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Puyallup were the Spanish in 1792 and they named it San Francisco de la Puebla because of its high mountain range and fertile soil. The Mexican-American War (1846-48) led to the removal of most of the Spanish settlers in turn leading to the name change. In 1853, John Jacob Astor founded an rancho called Rancho Puyallup and this name stuck until 1955 when it was changed back to its original name of San Francisco de la Puebla. In 1861, during the American Civil War, General James Kettlewell made an attack on Confederate positions at Fort Sumner near present day Tacoma and his force killed more than 100 people including women and children before being driven off by Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant's orders. When news reached Seattle about what had happened, many residents donated goods or money towards repairs to fortifications that would protect Seattle from future attacks by Kettlewell's troops. A post office called Puyallup was established in 1855; it became a town in 1909. The first mayor was Hyrum Wickersham; he served for one term only due to term limits set by then-Mayor Crippen after Wickersham ran unsuccessfully for reelection as a Democrat against Republican incumbent Harry Goode Jr.. In 1916 sawing began on what would eventually become Pioneer High School building that still stands today across from Interstate 5 southbound exit 610; foundations were dug early that year with work starting on school facilities which opened September 3rd, 1916 as Pioneer High School #1 (). In 1886, James Wickersham led an exploratory party that discovered oil shale near present-day Yelm and quickly became interested in its potential for oil production. He formed a company with his brother Charles Wickersham and others to explore this resource and named it Western Pacific Oil Company Ltd., but it failed to make any money before he sold it to Standard Oil Company of New Jersey in 1912. In 1914, World War I interrupted oil production and caused economic conditions to deteriorated; however, by 1919 production had resumed thanks to advances in technology including Henry Ford's Model T car manufacturing plant at Kalamazoo Assembly Plant and other automobile companies' new assembly lines across America.
