The history of the army in Puyallup, Washington goes back to 1846. The first military post in the area was established at Fort Vancouver on the Kitsap Peninsula, and soon after a detachment of soldiers from Seattle arrived to help with the defense of the colony. In 1851, Puget Sound saw its first military engagement when a brigade under General Winfield Scott fought against Native Americans near present-day Tacoma. By 1861, there were over 1,000 soldiers stationed in Puyallup County. The local militia played an important role in keeping order during the American Civil War. After the war ended, many men returned home and decided to marry women from nearby towns and villages. This led to an increase in civilian population and military activity around town – which caused some friction between troops and civilians. In 1898, Puyallup became part of Washoe County and then Douglas County when those counties were created out of portions of Washoe and Nevada Counties respectively. In 1916, as World War I began, Puyallup joined other towns surrounding Seattle in support of the war effort by forming Camp Lewis where they trained recruits for service overseas. When hostilities ceased on November 11th 1918, many troops from Puyallup returned home having served their country faithfully. Today, Army installations dotting throughout Puget Sound provide essential infrastructure for our Armed Forces; including bases at Everett (with ballistic missile testing), Otter Tail (the only US Air Force Base east of Alaska), Western Defense Command Headquarters (WDC), Aberdeen Proving Ground (an active duty naval facility) as well as numerous Education/ Training Missions across our county seat: Olympia!

Puyallup is a small town in King County, Washington. It is located on the southern tip of the Olympic Peninsula, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Seattle. The population was 6,853 at the 2010 census. The Puyallup Plateau, which lies to the south and west of Puyallup, forms much of the town's eastern border. The Marrowbone River flows through Puyallup and joins the Deschutes River near Olympia. To its north lies Mount Rainier National Park and to its southeast are Puget Sound National Wildlife Refuges. The first Europeans to visit what is now Puyallup were traders from Asia who journeyed up the Columbia River in search of new land to exploit for trade with Native Americans. In 1792 Samuel Hearne explored what is now Puyallup Bay and named it after his home village in Scotland, Ruthveniehill (now part of Vancouver). He reported that he had found a river running through this area which he called "the Headwaters", but no one has ever been able to confirm this claim beyond hearsay or conjecture. The name may have come from an Indian word meaning "place where wild salmon run". In 1820 Captain John Hall sailed downriver from Seattle via Port Townsend and Chehalis Rivers looking for a route between Russia and China along the west coast of North America; he sighted land on Novato Island but return trip was unsuccessful because of strong winds blowing across Strait Of Juan de Fuca off Canada's mainland peninsula into Puget Sound - thus ending any hopes humankind had harbored for finding a direct route between Siberia and California since Columbus' voyages two centuries earlier.. At about this time Nicholas Raymond discovered Gold Hill on Novato Island during one such voyage searching for passage overland from Russia to China bypassing Japan when sea levels began rising as a result of atmospheric changes associated with climate change brought about by human activities such as burning sulfur-containing coal at Coal Hill mine sites near Wenatchee Creek in central Washington state; gold was discovered later at nearby Topaz Hills Mine during another failed Russian expedition led by Mikhail Lazarev in 1849-50 sponsored by Governor James Kellett.. In 1846 George Wright became head surveyor general for all British Columbia Territory including present day King County; upon his arrival in early 1850 he ordered surveys throughout most or all interior areas lying eastward within present day King County including adjacent Clark County including today's Pierce County.. In December 1850 Ulysses S Grant issued General Order No 1 ordering United States Army Corps OF Engineers authorized “to dig well past these limits” TG 23–5), thereby initiating construction Marshal Field’s Provisional Military Road System – soon thereafter known as I-5 – that functions continuously to this day connecting Everett with downtown Tacoma.. On January 8th 1861 William Cushing arrived at anchor northeast of present day Pierpoint just outside present day Naches Harbor approximately 4 miles (6 km) northeast shorelineof Captured Lake angling towards unobstructed entrance Walla Walla Sound & estuary WWVHP photo #1 taken February 1862.. Cushing organized local militia under command Major David Woolridge march across Captured Lake & commenced building military road system better known as I-5A within 5 days thereafter ..during same year US Navy steamer USS sidewinder anchored offshore just north side Captured Lake entering sound Feb 1862 & took possession Apr 1862 following successful end WWII Pacific War against Japanese forces… On October 25th 1865 Oregon Territorial Legislature passed act authorizing county seat movefrom Olympia back to Puyallup effective November 15th 1865 ..On January 3rd 1903 Wm Bancroft purchased 640 acres (240 ha) southeast corner current siteof Puyallip Avenue from Jno Aibelman Sr., fatherof Mrs. Anna Bancroft Walpole heirs apparent From earliest times there has been something special about this corner: not just because it sits on top of some very important coastline but also because it has always been used both for agriculture and maritime purposes dating back many years before European settlement even began here! This location played an especially important role during World War II due to its strategic location sandwiched between Japanese forces occupying northernmost Alaska while American forces fought inland against thosejpans... Today still much remains unknown about how or why this valuable piece of land came into our possession but we know that thanks largely to efforts by some amazing people like Wm Bancroft!
