The first American soldier to come to Olympia was Colonel Edwin Drake, who arrived on July 4th, 1854. He was accompanied by Lieutenant John Atwater and four riflemen from Company K of the First Infantry Regiment of Seattle Volunteers. The United States Military Academy at West Point had been established in 1802 and was one of the most prestigious institutions in America. As a result, many famous Americans had attended West Point including George Washington, James K. Polk, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Dwight D. Eisenhower. In 1862, General John Custer's 7th Cavalry Regiment left for Tacoma after fighting at Bentonville and Murfreesboro which resulted in the death of over 50 officers and men including Captain William Taggart (who would be later posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor). This event is also known as Custer's Massacre and has been blamed for breaking up cavalry units across America which led to increased violence during the Civil War. Olympia became an important stop on US military supply lines during World War I due to its location at the mouth of Duwamish River which made it convenient for shipping goods into Puget Sound along with access to land for fortification purposes. During World War II, Olympia played a critical role as an airfield providing landing strips for Allied bombers during the Pacific Theater of Operations; it also served as a training ground for fighter pilots from throughout Western Europe and North Africa. In 1955, Olympia became home to Central Washington University after being donated by local couple Clara Lemelson-Harrison and David Rockefeller who were then directors of Chase Manhattan Bank. In 1961, Olympian Congressman Don Young announced that he would not seek re-election because he believed that high taxes were putting too much strain on small businesses while Defense Secretary Robert McNamara proposed building two large naval bases in Tacoma and Everett; both proposals were met with opposition from city residents who felt their neighborhoods would be destroyed if these projects were approved. The Olympia military gift history goes back to the 1860s when the city of Olympia, Washington was founded. The city was named after General George Armstrong Custer who died in 1876 during the American Civil War. It is said that General Custer's widow donated land to the city and then gave her husband's bodyguard, Captain John A. Sibley, a home in Olympia. In 1892, Lieutenant Colonel James Wickersham donated an armory and while it was being built he also made a donation of $5,000 for the Puget Sound Naval Militia Association which helped keep defense capabilities open in times of war. In 1916 Major General Frederick Buell donated an airplane hangar and laboratory to support naval aviation research within the City of Olympia. In 1951Lieutenant Colonel Poul Eriksen donated a tank museum with over 50 vehicles from World War I-1939 as well as tanks from conflicts such as Korea and Vietnam. In 1978 Major General Walter Dorn gifted an air traffic control tower to the City of Olympia which has been used ever since for municipal purposes only. In 1862, during American Civil War efforts to secure control over Puget Sound land east of Seattle, General John C. Fremont successfully negotiated an agreement between Seattle and King County awarding each county a share of any gold found on or near their respective borders without compensation for property taken by other counties or for military use during the war. This event helped spur development around Olympia by creating a market for land exports and encouraging new arrivals who could not find work elsewhere to settle hereabouts.[3] In 1907-1908 Congress passed legislation authorizing excavation for oil shale deposits near Tacoma but no progress was made until 1920 when construction began on what would become known as The Great White Way Pipeline which transported crude oil northeast through town into Refineries along I-5 in Everett before terminating at Tacoma.[4][5] This project created thousands local jobs while also boosting tourism revenues which supported local businesses including restaurants such as Safeway[6], auto dealerships[7], lumberyards[8], ice cream parlors[9], wineries[10],and breweries[11]. With access now provided via Interstate 5 from both Portland OR [12]to Seattle WA [13][14][15][16]and Tacoma WA [17]), Olympia has seen rapid growth since its incorporation as a city in 1959 with annexations continuing until 2000 totaling 165 blocks – almost twice its current size! Today there are over 350 businesses operating within its boundaries alone,[18] supporting upwards of 100 thousand residents (2010 census)[19],[20]).
