Oak Harbor is a town in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. Oak Harbor is located on Puget Sound and comprises six villages: Anacortes, Bainbridge Island,Bellevue, Bella Vista, Birch Bay, and Commencement Bay. The first documented mention of Oak Harbor comes from a document written by Captains John Stevens and James Cook while they were exploring the Northwestern Pacific coast in 1792-93. They described an "Island" which they named after their captain's uncle who had purchased it from the local Indians in 1786. In 1834 when Peterkin opened his ferry service to travelers between Aberdeen and Olympia he called it "Oak Harbor." The name change came about because residents of nearby Bellevue objected to the use of a word that might be thought derogatory or offensive to them given their Indian heritage. In 1881 when Puget Sound ferries became available for public transportation passengers could travel between Seattle and Olympia using either boat or train services operated by Pemberton Brothers Navigation Company Incorporated (later known as Seattle&Tacoma Railway). This new transportation option made Oak Harbor an important stop for commuters on their way to work in both cities. When the company merged with other companies in 1923 it was renamed Pembina Railway Company serving as its parent company until 1955 when it became part of Canadian National Railway (CNR). The first store open in Oak Harbor was built by William Hammonds on Third Avenue in 1887. A second store opened two years later on First Street east of Tacoma Street. By 1912 there were twelve stores open in the town with four more opening during World War I and another six during World War II including one built specifically for military purposes at 4240 Main Street which served as a barracks for troops stationed at Kent Lake Naval Base before being decommissioned in 1957 and sold to developers who used it as an office building until 1984 when it burned down. During World War II Japanese American prisoners-of-war living outside of Tacoma were moved into Hazelnut Hill internment camp located near present day Auburn University where they lived underrexclusion regulations until 1943 when they moved into what is now Elmhurst Elementary School across from Terminal 7 shopping center where they remained until early 1990s when all camps were closed due to budgetary constraints associated with Japan's surrender following World War II

Oak Harbor experienced some growth during World War II as many businesses were destroyed in the bombing raids that took place in 1945. After the war, Oak Harbor experienced a period of decline until it regained its status as an active community by the late 1990s.
