Oak Harbor is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Oak Harbor were fur traders who came ashore in 1792 and looked forland that could be claimed by the British Crown as part of their Northwest Territories land empire. They named it New Alaska because they thought the region might contain high tundra around the coast. The first permanent settler in Oregon Valley was George Vancouver, captain of HMS Discovery and one of the first European explorers along America's Pacific Coast, on July 8, 1795. Vancouver named Point Defiance after his ship's commander in command—the Spanish navigator José de la Salle—and called nearby Burlington Bay "IslandBay" because there was only one small island in that bay. In 1851 John Denny platted what are now downtown Oak Harbor and its neighborhoods on land that had been donated by Major General Winfield Scott Polk to become a town site for settlers who would help build irrigation systems for Puget Sound and Northwestern Washington agriculture during the gold Rush period. The first store opened in 1852; a post office operated from 1863 to 1865; and a school began operation in 1865 as part of an educational program led by Captain James Cook set up to teach English skills to native people living near Puget Sound before they could be taken into slavery by American forces during World War II. As more residents arrived throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s, development increased rapidly with new housing developments being built along First Avenue NE (now University Way NE), Third Avenue NE (now Cherry Street NE), Sixth Avenue NE (now State Street SE), Fourth Street SE (now Federal Way WA) – all within walking distance of each other – making Oak Harbor one of America's most vibrant towns when it Hit One Million Residents!
