Newcastle is a small town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. Newcastle's history dates back to 1853 when it was founded as a city by gold prospectors on the north bank of the Tualatin River. In 1870, Newcastle became an agricultural center with white farmers and Indian citizens working together to produce food for local markets and provide goods for soldiers fighting in the American Civil War. AfterSeattle incorporated as its own city in 1907, Newcastle declined until it regained its former status as a city in 1978 when it amalgamated with neighboring SeaTac to form Seattle-Tacoma. The first settlers were French Canadians who arrived from Quebec in 1853 and established a farming community on land that now includes much of downtown Newcastle. The first town meeting was held on November 4, 1853, and under the leadership of Mayor John Fenton it voted to name itself Newcastle after then-British Columbia capital Victoria (then present day Vancouver). The first school was built in what is now First Street and Pacific Avenue; classes began on October 8th, 1854. At that time there were only four residents living in Newcastle: Mayor Fenton, his wife Mrs. Leland Ferguson (the daughter of Scottish settler Alexander Ferguson), one son Alfred Ferguson (a farm laborer) and two daughters Sarah Ferguson (later married to George Higginson) and Louise Higginson (later Lady Aberdeen). By 1860, there were twenty residents living in Newcastle; most worked on farms or took care of children while their parents attended college or worked elsewhere in the area. During America's Civil Warrington enlisted with troops under General Ulysses S Grant at Camp Scott nearpresent day Auburn; he died from wounds received at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 just days before New Zealand Consul General James Weir arrived to tend to his post!
