It lies on the eastern shore of Lake Union and is part of the Bellevue–Anacortes–Renton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Newcastle is located near Seattle's downtown core and Boeing Field. Newcastle was founded by Ishmael Smith in 1859 as an agricultural community on the east bank of Newcastle Creek. Smith moved his family to Newcastle in 1875 when he purchased 162 acres (65 ha) of land along the banks of the stream to establish a new town site. He named his new town Newcastle after his home village in England. By 1888, only 104 residents lived in Newcastle; however, it rapidly grew into a small rural community with homes for many people from all around King County until 1930 when it reached its current size with 1,841 residents. In 1960, John Fenton purchased 640 acres (240 ha) northeast of Newcastle and plans were developed to create a large city called Bellevue which would include most of what now stands as Newcastle – including its original town site – as well as parts of Anacortes and Renton. However, this idea never came to fruition due to opposition from nearby Bellevue’s white working class residents who felt that they had been overlooked during the development process and their neighborhood changed hands several times over the next few years until it finally reverted back to what it once was: a mainly black majority minority neighborhood surrounded by predominantly white suburbs during much of its history. In 1984, owner/developer Donny Rouse announced plans for what would become known as Skagit Valley which would be centered around his sprawling suburbia located adjacent to Newmarket Road just south of Renton International Airport onSkagit River]. The first white people arrived in 1825 when John Day made his way across what is now Puget Sound on horseback searching for gold deposits. He discovered an area that would later be called Newcastle Landing and began mining resources here. By 1855, Newcastle had become one of the most important mining towns in America due to its abundance of gold ore and coal seams within easy reach for miners. During World War II, Newcastle played a critical role in supplying munitions needed by both Allies and Axis combatants throughout Europe. The town's strategic location placed it close to major battlefields such as Normandy and Flanders where munitions were stockpiled for use during wartime. In 1945, after Japan's surrender hostilities ended and Japanese possessions were dissolved into Allied control, many Japanese people living in Western Australia fled their home country following Emperor Hirohito's proclamation that Japan should be abolished as a national entity under international law; this led to mass migration among various Asian-American groups including Japanese expatriates living in Western Australia prior to World War II . In 1948–49, American soldiers stationed at Fort Lewis National Recreation Area (later Fort Lewis University) brought huts or tents with them while they constructedFort Lewis Park which included a football field/residence complex known as "Haven". As more military personnel moved into Newcastle during these years there was an increased demand for housing units within Fort Lewis Park which led to construction of what is nowknown as Physical Plant 1 (PP1). From 1951 through 1957 PP1 housed 4500 American servicemen/women who used Army barracks located adjacent to PT Barnstable Bay which served as gymnasiums/ theaters/apartments etc., ultimately becoming one of largest army installations west coast USA . After independence from British Columbia on July 14th 1959 local residents voted overwhelmingly not incorporation into any new Canadian province; this event represented an assertion by local residents that they were not subject unto Ottawa’s jurisdiction nor did they want their culture or history subjugated by Canada’s larger society As early settlers arrived at Newcastle there were few trees so lumbering operations took place primarily using explosives 8 miles away at old Snohomish mine however this closed down 1936 leaving only 600 acres remaining today woods cover much majority remains mined areas visible today are remnants Of old mill & smelter dating back pre-mining era
