And by 1912, Mukilteo had its own coffee roaster! The first Europeans in what is now Mukilteo came overland from Siberia in 1853 during their Oregon Trail journey. They named their new settlement after George Vancouver's landing site near present-day Portland, Oregon. The first post office was established at Mukilteo on March 5, 1855. In 1907, local citizens voted to incorporate as a town with a total population of about 1,200 people. At that time there were no schools or medical facilities within miles of Mukilteo so residents had to send their children to school inSeattle or Bellevue. A store and telephone line were built shortly thereafter which allowed for easy access to essential services for those living nearby. In 1958, Mukilteo became one of four towns inKing County (alongwith Ballard, Kent Beach and SeaTac)incorporating under a new government called "The Municipal Borough." Today, Mukilteo remains an agricultural community with several thousand acres of farmland irrigated through its own system of canals and reservoirs feeding Puget Sound's three major rivers: The Salish River; The Duwamish River; andthe Columbia River downstream from downtown Seattle
