Bill and Tracey opened The Kapp Place because they wanted to offer a unique experience for their customers. They made sure to use only high-quality beans from local roasters, and they also designed their own packaging and menu items. Over time, The Kapp Place became a popular tourist spot for people living in Mountlake Terrace. It served as a social hub for locals and tourists alike, giving residents an opportunity to connect with each other over coffee. In addition, the store helped develop relationships between the community members and local roasters. This gave rise to the idea of starting a small batch coffee company in Mountlake Terrace – which is what eventually led to Starbucks opening its doors here in 1998.

Mountlake Terrace is located on the eastern edge of Lake Union and is bordered by Issaquah to the north, Bellevue to the east, Redmond to the south and west, and Everett to the northwest. The first people to live in what is now Mountlake Terrace were Native Americans who hunted game near present-day Pioneer Square.
