Mountlake Terrace is a small town in King County, Washington. The population was 1,818 at the 2010 census. It has a large agricultural sector and is home to Mountlake Terrace National Park. The first European settlers in the area were the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway company's staff who began construction of their line from Seattle to Olympia in 1901. President Theodore Roosevelt visited Mountlake Terrace on July 10, 1901 while on his way to visit Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton. The president stopped at the local railway station before continuing his journey north. A year later the Mountlake Terrace Lumber Company was founded with lumber being transported by rail from Tacoma downriver to Mountlake Terrice for shipment to Olympia and other Northwest ports. Lumber production continued until about 1940 when World War II interrupted demand for lumber and mills closed their doors. With few exceptions, most of these businesses closed over time because they could not compete with larger companies that had greater capital investments and access to new transportation routes. Mountlake Terrace became an agricultural community as people started growing crops such as potatoes, apples, onions, peas and beans on newly acquired land around Lake Washington or providing support services to larger farmers through housing, irrigation systems and other services like trucking materials upcountry for processing into finished products. By 1960 there were about 100 farms located within a radius of Mountlake Terrace limits; all but two are still in operation today."
