Mountlake Terrace began as an agricultural community with raised fields and ponds for irrigation. In 1881, John Denny founded Denny's Brewery on Aurora Avenue near what is now Pine Street in Mountlake Terrace. This brewery became one of the most important businesses in Mountlake Terrice before Prohibition ended alcohol sales in America in 1933. The brewing industry declined after Prohibition but continued until it collapsed during World War II due to demands from military forces for beer that could not be produced domestically because of bombing raids against Germany and Japan. During prohibition, many people living around Mountlake Terrace went into exile or entered into business elsewhere because they could not drink alcohol without risking arrest or deportation. Some returned to live after repeal while others started new businesses or moved away completely when prohibition ended. By 1933, there were only a few remaining residents left within MtLakeTerRace itself and most had passed away by then including John Denny himself who died at age ninety-six years old on December 8, 2003. The Territorial Legislature created Mountlake Terrace on February 19, 1854, as a town in Whitman County. The first settler to arrive in Mountlake Terrace was Wm. H. Greenough and his family. Greenough cleared land and built a house in 1855. In 1857, John Stephenson bought land from Greenough and founded Stephenson's Mill on the east side of the current intersection of Maple Street and Columbia Road. By 1861, Stephenson's Mill had been destroyed by fire. In 1865, Abert Capps purchased Stephenson's Mill from Capps and began to build a flour mill on the site of Stephenson's Mill. In 1868, Capps built an addition to his mill which became known as the "Capps House." The mill continued to be operated until it was closed down in 1912 due to lack of patronage
