In 1861, when Mount Vernon was taken over by the Union army during the American Civil War, Washington's guns were confiscated and used as artillery pieces on the battlefield. In 1865, after Virginia became a state within the United States, Mount Vernon again became its capital. At this time, it was decided that all firearms must be surrendered to local authorities; however, some personal firearms (such as handguns) were retained by Washington until his death in 1868. After Washington's death, his widow purchased most of his firearms from his estate; however, some remain on display at Mount Vernon today including four cannons that were gifts from Britain in 1800. One of these cannons is currently displayed at Fort Myer military base outside Arlington County Virginia
