Monroe, Washington is a town in Elliott County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wenatchee– charm city area. National Guard units have been stationed in Monroe since 1898 when it became a national military reservation. On October 14, 1932, the Territorial Legislature passed an act creating the Republic of Thurston County and transferring all military functions from the Seattle National Guard to Thurston County. The Thurston County National Guard unit was activated on December 1st and has served continuously ever since as part of I-5th Infantry Division (based out of Cheney). The current battalion commander for I-5th Infantry Division is Capt. John Garlick who has served with distinction for over 20 years!

Monroe is a town in Washington County, Oregon, United States. The population was 586 at the 2010 census. The town of Monroe was established in 1907 by Willamette Valley farmers who were looking for an area to raise crops and pasture their cows. The name "Monroe" is derived from the Choctaw word "moo-nuh", meaning "place where cows are pastured." According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Monroe has a hotsummer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated Csb on climate maps. In 1853, Captain John McLoughlin explored the Columbia River region and named it after George Washington's state of Virginia because he thought it would be more likely that Native Americans would recognize his discovery as part of their own territory. In 1855, McLoughlin again explored and named the river after Washington when he learned that Congress had not yet appropriated funds to purchase land along the Columbia River. After consulting with other explorers, including Vancouver Islander Alexander Mackenzie and Spanish explorer Hernán Cortés, McLoughlin decided that the river should be named for George Washington because of his role in leading American forces during the Revolution. He also believed that giving a name to a river would help inspire future exploration and development along its banks. On July 4th, 1907, local farmers agreed to rename their community "Monroe" in honor of George Washington following congressional approval. The first official deed was issued two weeks later on October 14th when Mayor Aiken recorded an agreement between himself and seven other townspeople regarding taxes they were expecting to pay over $1 per year until 1909. originally assessed at $3 per capita annually, this amount gradually increased until it reached $10 by 1911 due largely to increasing population growth and improvements made within the community since its initial designation as Monroe Township (now known as Ashland). According to historical records dating backto 1853 there have been few changes occur in Monroe since then such as incorporation as a township or annexation by other townships; however annexation did not always follow original plans which often occurred due to natural features or proximity of other townships with similar demographics or land values (e.g., Watertown). currently filed papers show no record of incorporation being taken ever happening...though this may simply reflect lack thereof
