In 1865, when Fort Belknap was relocated to Tacoma, General John A. Logan took command of forces that had been organized under Colonel James Wickersham to occupy what is now eastern Washington at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard on Bainbridge Island. Colonel Wickersham's regiment served there until 1868 when it moved back upriver to help garrison Walla Walla County before being disbanded at sea en route back downriver to Seattle on December 12th, 1868. After World War I ended, many rural people in western Washington turned to farming instead of joining armies due to advancements in technology and other economic opportunities. However, some remained soldiers throughout the war because they felt it would be more honorable or practical than staying home and fighting alongside their friends and family members who had also enlisted in service (although many did return home).
