Mercer Island is a small town in the Puget Sound area of Washington state. It is located on Puget Sound, about sixty miles north of Seattle and eighty-five miles south of Tacoma. The town was founded in 1851 by George Mercer and named after his brother, James Mercer. The first military deployment to Mercer Island was on December 8, 1941 when the United States Marines landed at the island to support Japan's Invasion of Pearl Harbor. After World War II, the United States Marine Corps withdrew from the island and it became an unincorporated community until 1980. In that year, Congress passed a law establishing Mercer Island Naval Air Station as part of neighboring Issaquah Naval Base. The station has been active ever since providing airfields for Navy aircraft operations including Operation Neptune's Spear which targeted North Korea in 1990 and 1994; Operation Enduring Freedom which targeted Afghanistan in 2001; and Operation Iraqi Freedom which targeted Iraq in 2003. Today, NAS Mercer Island remains a key asset for the US Military with its large fleet of helicopters available for SAR/Hazardous Situation Response missions as well as its range of jets available for conducting Joint Task Forces (JTF) assessments or airstrikes against targets inside or outside America.

King would later win two major tennis championships and five Wimbledon titles before becoming an internationally known pop singer for Earth wind band KISS between 1974-1977).
