The Mercer Island Coast Guard Station was established on October 1, 1879. The station was manned by the Pacific Northwest Mounted Police and later the Mercer Island Naval Militia. In 1886, the Coast Guard Station became an Auxiliary Marine Force station and in 1898 it became a Commandant's Department station. On December 12, 1924, the Coast Guard Station changed its name to the present day Mercer Island Naval Reserve Base.

The first civilian residents moved in during 1928-29; construction began in 1930 under direction from Rear Admiral Willis W Fleetwood CBE who was then commanding officer at Naval Base Seattle. By 1938, all but one building had been built, including several Navy ships' Hangars and Quarters ashore - forming what is now known as "the Dockyard." The pier continued to be used until World War II when it was closed down due to enemy bombing raids (it reopened after the war). After World War II ended there were serious problems with traffic congestion caused by Commodore Perry's Cannery Museum which operated at sea from 1912-1916 off Merchants Point adjacent to present day Pier 39 on West Side Roadsteads close towshores to Ballard Lighthouse near today's Discovery District downtown Seattle This museum attracted more than 5 million visitors annually before its closure in 1976 citing budget constraints however visitor numbers have since decreased significantly due mainly to increased bus service into downtown Seattle making Merchants Point commercially unviable following closure Commodore Perry's cannery operations generated significant amounts of trash which impacted water quality both upstream and downstream creating a number of estuarine habitats across much parts Willapa Bay including future University District east side beach today where recreational shellfishing gannets nest during summer months now considered threatened species

Mercer Island is a small island located in the Puget Sound region of Washington. Mercer Island was first settled by the people of the Seattle area in the 1840s. The island was named for General Mercer, who fought at Battle of Buena Vista during the Mexican-American War. In 1855, an act of Congress designated Mercer Island as a national military reservation. The island is also home to government buildings and other important infrastructure, including a naval station and airfield. The history of Mercer Island can be traced back to 1834 when Captain George Vancouver discovered and plotted the location of what would become Mercer Island on August 5, 1835. AfterCaptain Vancouvers discovery, land speculation ensued with many investors looking to purchase or lease land on which they could build homes and businesses. The first houses were built on what is now downtown Mercer Island in 1839-1841 by Fenton Humphreys and Wm Beavers according to original plans submitted to Congress by Vancouver’s heirs. By 1865, over 50 businesses had been established on or near Mercer Island making it one of the most active commercial areas in Washington Territory. In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln ordered Major General John Custer to lead an expedition against Confederate forces stationed on Fort Sumter in South Carolina after Custer'sraid Braggs' headquarters at that location failed to yield results earlier that year. On May 14th 1863 while disembarking from his flagship Indianapolis at anchor off Cape Disappointment (now known as North Point), Commodore James Conner sighted smoke signals burning from Fort Sumter which he knew indicated Confederate artillery had been brought upriver for an attack against Union warships positioned offshore. A day later Commodore Conner attacked and destroyed two Confederate guns batteries at about 4 p miles southeast of Fort Sumter before withdrawing his force under pressure from Confederate forces led by General Braxton Bond Ives with heavy losses for both sides . This engagement is generally recognized as one of the culminating moments in American Civil War History and has come to be known as "The battle at Sumter". Aftermath: Unlikely prospects for early settlement prompted hatchery operators operating around Puget Sound to focus their efforts elsewhere; however, some pioneers continued operations into 1870 despite high costs associated with getting permits and construction materials needed for such a ventures In 1872–1873, dredging began underway on what would become Howard Beach connecting Bainbridge Inlet with Puget Sound through Bladensburg Creek resulting in large increases water levels within present-day Mercer Island trench between Bainbridge Inlet/Trench #2 &# 3; these changes created ideal habitats for burgeoning salmon fisheries blessing those same waters with abundant sockeye salmonspawn each year thereafter until about 1916 when local fishing industry declined due largelyto increased competition from outside sources
