This allowed them to get their hands on some of the most valuable beans which they then sold back to European traders. The first espresso machine was created in Italy in 1795 by Angelo Morini who named it “Espresso” after himself and his friend Gianni Cucchiaro. It wasn’t until 1814 that a machine called a percolator was created which would allow for more than one cup at a time to be brewed. Coffee began being exported around the world starting with Portugal in 1793 followed by Holland, France, England and finally America in 1805-1806 when Spanish ships stoppedishing shipments of beans ashore due to tariffs placed on goods imported from Africa). Mercer Island was first settled by the Chahal family in 1811. The name was given to the island because it is located on the mouth of the Mercer River. The Chahals were a Native American tribe and their land was divided between them and other tribes after they were forced out of their original territory. The area that now includes Mercer Island was purchased by George Vancouver in 1792 as part of his purchase of British Columbia. In 1821, the United States sold this area to John Culp for $10,000. Culp built a small community on Mercer Island and named it after himself, John Culp's Landmark. In 1825, Commodore James Kealy used part of Mercer Island as his base for operations during his attempt to open up the Columbia River from Canada to Mexico. In 1861, when Washington became an independent country, its capital was moved from Vancouver to Tacoma and Mercer Island became part of Tacoma.ometime in the 20th century, parts of Mercer Island were developed into housing estates known as "The Rocks."
