Mercer Island is a small town in King County, Washington, United States. It is located on the north shore of Lake Washington, about northwest of Seattle and about east of Bellevue. The population was 2,826 at the 2010 census. Mercer Island was founded as an agricultural community in 1887 by James W. McConnell and his family. The McConnells were among the first white farmers to settle in what is now King County. In 1916, the town became part of Seattle when it was annexed by the city. The military had a presence on Mercer Island since its founding days; during World War I, the local Coast Guard Station served as a base for artillerymen employed by the American Expeditionary Force (AEF). During World War II, civilian contractors worked at various naval vessels moored at Naval Base Kitsap until they were transferred to Pearl Harbor and then Guam. After World War II ended, most of these civilians left for good but some continued to live and work on Mercer Island until it attained its current size as an agricultural community in 1987. The Army bought land adjacent to Naval Base Kitsap in 1954 and began construction on Fort Lawley which would become one of America's largest Cold War missile launch sites; Construction stopped after only two years due to budget constraints however this site still remains active today with modern day facilities used for storage and security purposes only
