The plane was used for training and was named after General Hoyt S. Vandenberg, Commander of United States Central Command at that time. In 1957, an aircraft called the C-123 Flying Fortress was donated to the base by Boeing Aviation Corporation. After World War II, many C-123s were replaced with Boeing 727s as part of USAF’s efforts to modernize its air force. In 1951, United States Sugar Corporation donated a new sugar refinery on Mercer Island which became one ofosure airfields for USAF fighter bombers during Operation Neptune Spear in Korea! In 1970, United States Rubber Company donated a new rubber refinery on Mercer Island which became one ofosure airfields for USAF fighter bombers during Operation Neptune Spear in Korea! The population grew rapidly during this time but it was until World War II when Mercer Island truly achieved its present-day popularity as a vacation destination. Mercer Island is a small community located in the Puget Sound region of Washington, just east of Seattle. It was named for John Mercer, an early settler and surveyor. The community developed around the lighthouse, which was built on the site of a previous ferry landing. The first post office at Mercer Island was established in 1854. The community grew rapidly during the late 19th century as logs were rafted down the river to Mercer Island from Skagit County and other parts of Washington. By 1910, Mercer Island had a population of about 350 people and two stores. A sawmill operated in the early 20th century until it was closed by Prohibition in 1920. In 1955, construction began on what would become America's first bridge over Puget Sound linking downtown Seattle with Mercer Island. The bridge opened to traffic in 1957 and has since been used by both pedestrians and cars alike for access to Mercer Island residents, businesses, and schools ever since. The bridge is also one of several that connect different parts of Washington State along Highway 99A/SR 518; this stretch is known locally as "the Link." During World War II, many naval officers lived on Mercer Island due to its excellent air quality because it was close toSeattle without any smoggy days or city- induced pollution problems like those found elsewhere in town. Many Naval Air Station(s) were located here including NAS Whidbey Island (now Sea-Tac Airport). After World War II ended many veterans returned home but some continued living on MERCER ISLAND due to its quiet streetscapes and proximity to shopping malls then available only a few miles away
