The first donation was made by Captain John Cowlings of Portsmouth, England. Marysville is a small town located in the Yakima Valley of Puget Sound, Washington. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wenatchee-Tacoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1881 by George W. Smith and his wife, Cornelia Jane Carleton Smith. The name comes from a place called Marysville on Mount Vernon Island in Puget Sound. Smith's grandson John Condon established a grocery and general store on what is now Main Street in Marysville. By 1916, John Condon had also built a whitesmith shop and two other stores within the town limits. In 1922, Harry Swayne opened his Service Station restaurant on Main Street which became an important local landmark for many years afterwards. In 1925 Microsoft founder Bill Gates moved to Marysville and began working at his father's successful lumberyard there before starting Microsoft himself six years later in 1969. Gates would later become one of America’s richest people through his ownership of WyndhamHotels and other businesses throughout North America including Microsoft’s primary operating headquarters until he sold it to retired US President Bill Gates in 2003 for $77 million USD Gates also donated much of his personal fortune to various charity causes throughout his life including giving away over 50% of all his net worth to charity between 1997-2003 Today Marysville continues as an important agricultural center with wheat production accounting for over 90% of its economic activity while aluminum production provides jobs for several hundred residents .
