The first known European settlement in the area was in 1792 when a group of French fur traders, led by Colonel Pierre Marie du Pont, established a trading post on the upper Columbia River. The post was abandoned in 1805 after Du Pont's death. A brief period of human activity occurred in the area between 1815 and 1820 when squatters attempted to establish themselves along the lower Columbia River. In 1825, General George Washington ordered Major General Andrew Jackson to march his army down the river and besiege Camp Floyd, which guarded an important chokepoint on the river. After weeks of siege and fierce fighting, Jackson's forces were successful in withdrawding without loss. This event is commonly cited as being one of the most decisive military successes of Jackson's career. In 1830, gold was discovered at Gold Hill near Marysville and numerous other miners started arriving in Marysville from around Oregon and California looking for it.
