Marysville is a city in Eastern Washington, United States. The population was 22,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wenatchee–Tacoma metropolitan area. Marysville is located on the north bank of the Snake River, bordered by Cheney to the south and east, Chelan to the northwest and Thurston to the west. The town began as a small log settlement on an arm of Lake Pend Oreille in 1855. By 1890, it had grown into a busy agricultural center with farms that produced hay and oats, applesauce and other crops, cattle, sheep and goats, hogs, and lumber. The first settlers were families from Oregon who arrived in 1851 aboard the "Oregon" ship. They were followed by others from New York City in 1852 and Bostonians in 1853; each group brought their own land holdings with them when they moved to what is now Marysville. In 1860–1861 local farmers formed a commercial collective for raising hay for use on nearby ranches (the first marketable product raised here). In 1865 an act of Congress authorized Donation Land Sales which distributed 640 acre blocks (called donation tracts) among American citizens who would donate land to be used for public purposes such as schools or hospitals. A year later $10 per acre was charged for these sales which generated interest throughout rural America because it offered access to large strips of virgin forest not yet logged or plowed over. In 1870–71 residents voted to incorporation as a town under state jurisdiction but this effort failed because there wasn't enough money available from taxes levied on agricultural products exported out of town. A new election held in November 1893 resulted in annexation by Wenatchee County as part of that county's growth during this time period; however community activists successfully lobbied against annexation until 1906 when county officials finally agreed after considerable public opposition led by hotel owner Jepson Lewis (a key figure behind development in downtown Marysville). The history of Marysville begins with the arrival of the first white people in what is now Washington state in 1811. The area was named by Captain James Cook for his wife, Mary, who he sighting on an island near present-day Tacoma. The first permanent settler in what is now Marysville was Nicholas Everett, who arrived in 1814. He and his family soon moved to a cabin on the banks of the Columbia River. In 1815, Everett purchased land east of present-day Marysville from Chief Seattle for $3 per acre. Everett began construction on a log house that would become his home and courtesan's Saloon which opened its doors to the public on July 1, 1816. The town grew rapidly as settlers arrived and built homes around Everett's dock warehouse where they could store their goods or sell their produce. The businesses thrived until 1824 when bigoted members of the local Native American community accused Everett of sexual relationships with black women. This led to a race riot that left one person dead and dozens injured. After several days of violence and looting, Everett sued the Indians for damages but lost because they could not produce evidence against him. In 1830, John Day established himself as the first postmaster in what is nowMarysville after arriving from Illinois via Stagecoach Road. Day operated a small general store while also caring for his two wives and five children at home before starting a stagecoach service between Portland and Seattle carrying passengers overland across northern California (the route had been traveled by Lewis & Clark Expedition). From here he took horseback riding trips down to Granite Bayou to view potential investments there before returning northward along Stevens Creek Valley through today's Yakima County into Oregon Territory (then part of Mexico). On one such journey he met Chief Joseph Yakamatashvili who invited him back to live with him at his camp near present-day Olympia during winter months so thatDay could learn about Indian trade patterns among various areas along this coast including Puget Sound/Lake Washington
Marysville is a town in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. Marysville is part of theSeattle–Tacoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Marysville was John C. Fremont in 1853. He established a post office and market near present-day Whitman Lake on the Kitsap Peninsula. In 1857, George Fenton bought the entire peninsula from Fremont and named it after his wife, Mary Ann Fenton. Fenton's heirs developed the area into a major agricultural center with growing grain and dairy crops; forestry; and mining operations such as goldmining and silvermining until about World War II when those resources were exhausted by economic decline and competition from other countries. After that time, Marysville has been primarily an agricultural community with some light industry including a small plastics plant until recently. In recent years there has been significant growth in professional services (lawyers, doctors) due to steady job growth across all sectors of Northwest economy since Seattle–Tacoma Metro started counting jobs in 2000!
