The Washington Navy Yard was founded in 1801 as a Naval Academy. The first ship to be commissioned at the yard was USS Constitution, on May 9, 1802. The navy grew rapidly during the 19th century and by 1912 it had reached its peak with over 100 ships and submarines in service. However, during World War I the navy suffered significant damage and losses, including the sinking of HMS Hood in 1915. Following World War I, the navy merged with the Marine Corps to form the Department of Defense (DoD) in 1947. In 1961, the navy again lost an important warship when USS John F Kennedy was sunk while taking part in a nuclear test off Subic Bay Philippines. In 1995, the department merged with DoD’s Intelligence Community Management Agency to form CENTCOM which still operates out of HMAS Perth today. Today’s Washington Navy Yard is one of America’s most important military installations and provides vital capabilities for our nation’s defense. Maple Valley is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 6,814 at the 2010 census. Maple Valley is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The first settler in the area now known as Maple Valley was John Thomson in 1854. He and his family built a log cabin on the east side of present day Union Creek Road. In 1865, James Neilson settled in what is now Maple Valley and started a small farmstead that still stands today. The town name may come from maple syrup or maple trees which were abundant near where he lived. In 1872, George Nye platted and named both sides of Union Creek Road after himself - Neilson's land lay to the west and Nye's to the east. As time passed, more settlers began arriving in Maple Valley including Jno Pugh who arrived in 1876 followed by others such as Wm Hite until it had a population of 10 by 1880. By 1890, there were over 100 people living in Maple Valley with most working on farms or logging for lumber companies throughout their lifetime.(1) The early industry that developed around Maple Valley included logging, fishing, farming and manufacturing.(2) A sawmill was built along Union Creek Road between 1870-1880 which produced lumber for local homes and businesses as well as being used to build Tacoma’s first courthousethouse during 1886-87.(3) A post office was established at MapleValley in 1892(4) but failed due to low demand.(5) In 1907, an elevator company opened up shop at 12th Ave & Philbrook Street within walking distance of many residents which helped increase population density along with other new businesses like a grocery store (1907), bakery (1911), laundry (1920), doctor (1927), hair salon (1929). One of the earliest examples of modern architecture outside of Tacoma was erected here – The Pioneer House – also known as The White House – constructed by Dorman Brothers Incorporated between 1912-15 as an experimental housing development for workers employed by Seattle Shipbuilding Company on Puget Sound.(6) It wasn’t long before another innovative example appeared – An Ice Cream Parlor called “Frosty” opened up adjacent to this same shipyard complex serving conesicles from 1912 until 1940 when it closed down due to WWII rationing.(7) Another major employer during this time period was Boeing Ferry Company which transported passengers across Lake Washington using their boats(8). This sector stopped operating after World War II because boat traffic dwindled away associated with stricter travel regulations enacted following that conflict(9). Some old buildings still extant within downtown include: The United Methodist Church Built 1893; Masonic TempleBuilt 1902; First National Bank Building 1911; Post Office 1916; Red Cross Shelter 1930; Presbyterian Church Built 1915.) One potential future redevelopment project includes restoring/replacing many existing buildings within downtown park boundaries including: A School District building originally slated for demolition but later converted into retail/office space(&); A former hotel conversion intoresidential units &.; A cultural property formerly home to an amusement park that has been mostly abandoned since its closure circa 1990 (~); A former steel mill converted into apartments&.;A multi story business complex currently under construction designed by starchitects featuring Ritz Carlton style restaurants plus luxury residences
