Maple Valley is located on the eastern edge of the Yakima metropolitan area and is part of the Seattle–Tacoma Metropolitan Area. The name Maple Valley was given to it by residents who found maple trees growing abundantly near their homes. The first settlers in what would become Maple Valley were farmers who Temperance Road passed through on their way to farmer's markets in Seattle and Tacoma. The name "Maple Valley" has been used since 1881 when a post office called "Moses Lake" was established at the junction of State Route 5 (later renamed Highway 99) and Indian School Road. In 1907, when Interstate 90 became available, Highway 99 was rerouted east from Moses Lake along present-day Highway 3 to connect with I-90 south of Olympia. As part of this project, two lanes of highway were realigned from State Route 5 (now portions of I-5 and SR 520) east towards Olympia to form present day Highway 3 between Moses Lake Rd/SR 511 and US Forest Service land north of Olympia. In 1934, a proposed interchange with I-405 within Dekemyer Dam turned down because it would have disturbed growth around the dam site; However, an alternate route bypassing Dekemyer Dam was chosen instead which included current Highway 3 between US Forest Service land north of Olympia and SR 520 west of Moses Lake Rd/SR 511.. Since its creation as a census-designated place in 1990, Maple Valley has seen steady growth Despite having no incorporated municipalities or schools located within its boundaries until 1994 when South Creek Elementary school opened within town limits after yearslong negotiations between local officials and South Creek parents. According to 2000 U.S. Census data that reflects population trends for all places within King County over that five year period Maple Valley had increased by 121 people or 1%.
