Maple Valley was built by the Chelan and Douglas families in 1858 as an agricultural community on the eastern slope of Mount Rainier. The valley was named for maple trees that were grown there. The wealth created a rush to adopt new land claims in Maple Valley and elsewhere in what is now King County. By 1870, most of the residents had left for Yakima County or nearby towns such as Marysville and Spokane. In 1872, John Wesley Moody bought what is nowparts of Maple Valley from native tribes for $5,000 cash and began developing it into a farming community with excellent soils and access to water resources. Moody's colony quickly became one of the largest farmers in Washington state; by 1886, he boasted over 1,500 head of cattle and 500 acres (2 km2) of crops. Property values soared after timber prohibition led to bumper crop prices thanks to demand from logging companies across North America; by 1900, Moody's farm counted more than 10 schools and 2 churches among its holdings.
