The Lynden military family has been a part of the United States Armed Forces for over two centuries. The first American troops were stationed in Lynden when the state was founded in 1792. The Military Family Association of Puget Sound-Litchfield Counties (MFA) was formed in 1996 by retired colonel Earl Jorgensen and his wife Jeanne, daughter of retired lieutenant colonel John Gillespie with whom Earl co-founded PFCE Incorporated (Puget Sound Fleetwood Enterprise Company). The MFA provides support to inactive duty military families living within Seattle’s limits as well as to our local cadre of reserve officers and enlisted personnel who are honorably discharged or separated from service under honorable conditions. Lynden is a small town in Washington County, located about 20 miles east of Seattle. It was settled in 1847 by soldiers from the U.S. Army, who named it for General George Custer, who had died in battle two years earlier. Lynden became a census-designated place (CDP) on July 1, 1951. The population was 5,715 as of the 2010 census. When first surveyed by the United States Census Bureau in 1848, Lynden consisted of only a few houses and no land. In 1850 it increased to 10 families with 160 acres (66 hectares). The area now containing Lynden expanded rapidly during the early 1800s when logging campaigns led to an abundance of logs that could be chopped down and used for building materials and other purposes near Seattle’s port facilities at Duwamish Bay. Loggers also built mills on nearby rivers for turning these logs into woodchips and boards for use in housing and other products exported from Western Washington Territory. The first post office called Lynden “Benton” after Major General Robert Benton (1810-1875), commander of all American forces stationed at Fort Stevens on Bainbridge Island until its capture by British forces in 1837. A second post office was established at Redmond in 1851; both were discontinued due to lack of mail volume after arrival of the railways. The name “Lynden” was chosen because it resembled another small town located about 30 miles southeast of Seattle called Lester Prairie which functioned as an unofficial mailing center between Seattle and Walla Walla County until postal service arrived there in 1889.. In 1865 local citizens petitioned Congress to establish a new county seat within their borders – they got their wish within one year when Commissioners John Wickersham (1824-1900) and Levi Harriman chose Lynden over Walla Walla because its location made it accessible without having to go through Seattle or Wenatchee Valley which were then both very populous centers with commercial interests bordering each other1 . During World War II many people moved away from downtownSeattle due to bombings raids but many others stayed behind including those who founded Lynden Village which still stands today adjacent to the original lumberyard complex where most residents worked during those days2 . Aldermanic elections took place November 3rd 1960 through December 4th 1960 with incumbent Alvin Hansen being reelected unopposed despite challenging petitions received alleging impropriety regarding his vote totals while he served as Mayor3 . There were no general elections held that year owing largely to droughts that struck Northwest Washington Province twice during 1961-19644 . Five years later Allan Grant became Aldermanic President following reelection becoming one of the longest serving members ever elected to any municipal body5 ; he continued serving until his death on February 24th 19846 . The current Alderman Melvin Erikson has been City Councilman since 20037 ; he succeeded Allan Grant upon his death8 .

Lynden was founded on December 6, 1872 by J.W. Keith and his wife Anna Maria. The town was named after General James A. Lynden who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became a U.S. congressman from Washington state. On January 1, 1907, Lynden had its first post office which opened at 108 N Main Street. The first mail carrier was C H P White who arrived on horseback from Seattle on November 9, 1907
