Lakewood is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 31,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The city was founded on the site of an ancient Puyallup village and was named for John C. Lake, a surveyor and entrepreneur who arrived in 1851 to found what would eventually be called Seattle. Lakewood's first post office opened in 1856. The city's nickname "The City by the Lake" comes from its location by Puget Sound on The Lakeshore National Recreation Area which includes three large reservoirs: Lake Union (north), Mercer Island (east), and Snoqualmie Falls (south). These bodies of water formed when glaciers melted over 10,000 years ago and deposited millions of cubic yards of rock, soil, sand and clay on top of what is now downtown Lakewood. Today visitors can find evidence of this past via numerous ruins including the old Tacoma Ferry Terminal built in 1888 by Scott & Company as one of only two wooden terminals in America then serving both Tacoma and Olympia; four contributing buildings from the original town center located around Yesler Way NW; plus several contributing businesses such as Sears Roebuck & Co.'s new headquarters built between 1929-1930; Waffle House No 1 across from Southcenter Mall; Hotel Anacostia constructed c 1912 near International Boulevard NW; First National Bank building completed c 1923 along with a theater that seated 1,300 people before it burned down in 1951; late 20th century additions include two apartment blocks completed in 1978-1979 just south east of International Boulevard NW - one housing 106 units while another housed a restaurant/cafeteria complex called 'Noodle' until it closed down due to fire in 1984'; also note that Nicollet Avenue between State Street and Anacostia Boulevard NE has been renamed Nicollet Ave SE since it became an arterial street after Nicollet Drive which ran through downtownLakewood during much of its history
Lakewood was first settled by the Wenatchee tribe in 1836. The community was named for a small Yup'ik village on the upper Snake River. In 1850, the town was renamed Whitehorse after General John A. Logan, who played a major role in helping to win independence for Washington from Mexico. In 1898, Lakewood became part of what is now Spokane County when it was organized from parts of Yakima and Kittitas counties. It grew rapidly during World War II as the population increased because of the military base located there. At its peak, Lakewood had over 20,000 residents and two high schools. However, growth slowed after the war and overall social stability declined in the early 21st century; by 2017, Lakewood had about 10% of its pre-war population remaining.
