Lake Stevens is a body of water located in Washington State, United States. The name comes from the local Native American tribe, the Lake Stevens Band of Puyallup Tribe. The body of water was first named Kettle River by fur traders in the early 19th century. In 1855, Congress passed an act authorizing the donation to the United States of land east of Puget Sound for a national park and it took until 1916 for this land to be donated and create Lake Stevens National Park. The area around modern-day Lake Stevens was first occupied by various tribes during the initial occupations of North America. One group known as the Lummi nation lived on or near what is now Lakes Stephenson and Whitman before moving southward along Puget Sound in search of new territory. When white settlers arrived in early 19th century they discovered an area rich in resources including coal, gold, and timber. Fur Traders began trading with these groups and soon organized themselves into different hunting bands based on their location within specific areas such as Tumwater Creek watershed, Mount Baker watershed, Nisqually River watershed etc.). By 1855 there were over 100 Indian bands living throughout most of present day Washington Territory although only 10% had permanent residences east of Puget Sound. Various acts were passed by Congress recognizing Indian reservations within present day Washington Territory; among these was an act that authorized Donation Of Land To The United States For A National Park And Preserve which took effect on October 26th 1916. This act provided for creation Of Lake Stevens National Park which included parts of Whatcom County, King County, Pierce County and Snohomish County as well as portions of Thurston County (including Lynnwood). At its creation each county contributed $50000 towards the park’s establishment while donations continued to be made until 1976 when all federal lands within Washington State were transferred to the Department Of Interior under President Gerald Ford Jr.. As part of this change in ownership many properties within what is now Lake Stevens National Park were acquired including Hungry Horse Gulch which served as a campsite for Umatilla Indians during World War II military operations nearby Hansen Island
The first European to visit the area now known as Washington was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1492. He sighted Mount Rainier and named it after his patron, Saint Peter. The area that is now Puget Sound was first settled by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Clara band of the Pashtuns in the late 1700s. In 1851, when gold was discovered near Seattle, a group of prospectors headed down to Puget Sound by boat. They found rich deposits of gold but died in what is today called Gold Rush Canyon. The first post office on Orcas Island was established in 1854.
