Grant established a supply depot at Fort Stevens and later used it as his headquarters during operations around Yakima Valley. The fort saw much action in the war but also lost many soldiers and officers at its hands. After the war, Fort Stevens was converted into a military prison for Confederate prisoners of war in 1865-1867. It was eventually decommissioned and its structures demolished in 1961-1962. As part of modern day Washington state history, First Lake Stevens State Park has been home to various events including gubernatorial inaugurations, nationalconventions and more since it was created in 1959.
