The Coast Guard has been in the Lake Stevens area for over 100 years. In that time, they have given away many gifts to the community. One of their most popular gifts is a boat. Lake Stevens is a small, freshwater body located in Thurston and King counties, Washington. It was created by the junction of two branches of the Snoqualmie River. The name Stevens comes from Nicholas Stevens, who first arrived in 1825 and built a cabin on the present site of the community. The community grew up around the tavern and school which were established there in the 1830s. In 1854, Lake Stevens became another county seat when Thurston County was organized. By 1907, it had grown to encompass all of Thurston County and part of King County. The population peaked at 9,500 in 1940 but declined to 7,500 by 1960 due to changes in demographics and increased travel away from the area because of military service or mining activities. By 2000, however, it had recovered to its earlier level of population with about 7,000 people living there.

The name comes from the Haida word "Snoqualmie," which means "cold stream." Lake Stevens was first explored by European travelers in 1792. A fur trader named George Vancouver charted its course in 1795 while looking for a route to the Pacific Ocean. In 1811, Congress designated it as part of what would become Oregon. The town of Stevensville was founded on the site of present-day Olympia in 1853, and Lake Stevens became a U.S. national park in 1916.
