Lake Forest Park is a city in Washington County, Oregon, United States. The population was 31,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The community was organized on December 1, 1885 by John Pemberton and others who bought land east of the Willamette River from the Umpqua Tribe. On December 5, 1885, Pemberton dedicated a park in what is now downtown Lake Forest Park. The name "Lake Forest" originated with a donation by JF Saunders to build a public school in the area. The first post office in town was established on January 10, 1886. The first store opened on May 10 of that year. A sawmill and gristmill were built soon after and became operational around 1890-1892 as part of expanding production for nearby businesses like Foothills Cotton Mill & Sawmills and Western Lumber Company. In 1893, an electric company leased land from the lumber company near present day NW Broadway and Halsey Streets to provide power for lights in town during daylight hours; this allowed for larger businesses to open up shop without having to shut down during evening hours when electricity was not available. In 1907, developers George Burgess and Wm Horsley developed what is now NW 23rd Avenue into a shopping center with several small stores before selling it off in 1925 to become City Hall (later renamed Multnomah County Courthouse). Development continued until after World War II when most of downtown redevelopment stopped because there wasn't enough money available to maintain infrastructure or build new housing after so many people had moved out during the war years. Lake Forest Park is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bellevue– waterfront area which also includes Seattle and Redmond. The first white people to live in the area now known as Lake Forest Park were fur traders working for Russia in 1853-1855. They named their community after a tree near their trading post on the western shore of Lake Union. In 1882, A[nderson] C[hrenshaw] donated land to establish the city of Bellevue on Puget Sound, but it was not until 1907 that Bellevue officially became the independent city of Lake Forest Park. In 1912, following annexation by Bellevue of neighbouring Snohomish County (then still rural), Lake Forest Park merged with neighboring Seattle to form one municipality. The growth and development of Lakeside Avenue and its surroundings during World War II saw an increase in businesses and housing developments; this period is also often referred to as "the golden age" of Lakeside Avenue. On July 1, 1957, when King County was reorganized into wards within what would become Seattle Municipal Court under state law changes enacted that year,[1] Lakeside Avenue became one block east from First Street between University Way Southwest and Union Station Road outside downtownSeattle limits (it had been part of blocks 2-5 south side). This change brought about an overall decrease in business alonglakefront avenue due to increased competition from new shopping malls opening nearby (such as CenturyLink Field).[2][3][4][5] However, many older buildings along lakeside remain well preserved thanks to efforts by residents over decades.[6]
