In 1854, Nathaniel Hawthorne bought land near modern day Seattle and began building an experimental cotton mill. While construction was ongoing, he leased space from John Jameson to sell handguns and shotguns to local residents. This allowed weaponsmiths such as George Eberhard to build guns specifically for Hawthorne's mill products. After Hawthorne's death in 1865, his heirs continued to sell firearms under their own name until 1889 when they sold all their assets to J&R Stevens Arms Company of Everettitled "Nathaniel Hawthorne Firearms Manufacturing Co." Stevens remained head office until 1907 when it merged with Wm Hogg & Sons Sons armaments company (now part of Mayors Arms). Kirkland, Washington is a small town in the Cascade Mountains of western Washington. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Kirkland were relations of Captain George Vancouver and his crew who settled on land east of present day Bellevue near present day Issaquah on November 11, 1792. The first permanent settler was Levi Holland who came from Easton, Pennsylvania in 1819. In 1853, James Denny founded Denny's Land and Agricultural Company which later became known as Denny's Farm & Dairy. In 1871, John Smeaton began operating an early flour mill in what is now downtown Kirkland. In 1896, entrepreneur Augustus Earle started Whatcom County Electric Light Company which served the town until 1924 when it was replaced by the modern Kirkland light company that still operates today. On July 10th 1907, a fire destroyed most of the existing businesses including Denny's Land and Agricultural Company and John Smeaton's flour mill leaving only Whatcom County Electric Light Company standing. The company continued to operate until 1951 when it merged with Pacific Telephone and Telegraph to form Western Telephones&Telegraphs (later Western Telecom). In 1912 WSPL built a substation in downtown Kirkland providing service to rural areas across what is now King County while AT&T constructed their own substations nearer Mountlake Terrace and Everett making Kirkland completely connected with Seattle through phone lines rather than relying on horse or wagon transportation across long distances like earlier settlements did.
