Kirkland is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 997 at the 2010 census. The name of the city comes from nearby Issaquah Creek. In 1861, Kirtland College was established in downtown Kirkland by Congregationalists led by Reverend Wm. Payson Keyes. In 1872, Kirtland became an independent town and had its own school board and library system. In the late 19th century, timber resources began to become depleted as a result of land concessions and other economic factors; accordingly, business activity shifted to Seattle in the early 20th century. However, Kirkland's reputation as an agricultural center grew during this time due to its significant acreage of wheat bushes and other cereal crops used for feedstock for industrial production (particularly brewing). When World War II began, Kirkland became one of the largest military bases in western Washington; it remains one of the most active military communities in the Puget Sound region today.
