The history of the Kirkland, Washington Army National Guard is trace back to 1861 when the state of Washington Adopted a resolution to create an army. The first unit in the state was organized on December 10, 1861 and called the 1st Infantry Regiment. The regiment served throughout the American Civil War, campaign against Confederate forces in Virginia and Maryland and participated in many battles including Appomattox Court House, First Bull Run and Antietam. In 1865, the 1st Infantry Regiment disbanded but its members were not melted down as some other units did during the war. They were instead placed into another organization which became known as Company I ofthe 2nd Infantry Regiment Washington Volunteers. From 1867-1869 Company I was stationed at Fort Snelling in Minneapolis Territory before being moved to Spokane County where it remained until 1874 when it was again transferred to Tacoma County for service with General John Custer's Cavalry Brigade during Expedition to Yellowstone National Park. After his death in 1876, General Custer's Brigade was dissolved and Company I returned to Spokane County where it remained until 1880 when it again left for Tacoma County for service with District of Columbia militia under Brigadier General James Haggerty. In 1882 company I relocated from Tacoma County back to Kirkland and continued serving with District of Columbia militia through 1886 when it finally disbanded after a final tour of duty in that area.
Kirkland, Washington is an unincorporated community in Clallam County, Washington, United States. It lies on the south bank of the Juan de Fuca Strait between Vancouver Island and the mainland. The population was 515 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the larger city of Seattle. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Kirkland was made by Captain George Vancouver on July 17, 1792 during his Second Voyage to North America. Vancouver named a cape after himself - Juan De Fuca - and established a small town nearby with 10 or 12 settlers. In 1851, gold prospectors discovered gold near present-day Kirkland; however, no mining took place until 1858 when two men from Oregon working for James Halliday landed at Juan de Fuca Strait and set up camp there. They specified that their finds should be known only as "Halliday Gold". By 1860 some 50 men were operating in and around present-day Kirkland; but it was not until 1863 that lumbering began restricted to just a few companies because of overmining activities elsewhere in British Columbia. In 1865 John Muir visited what is now Kirkland while exploring Mount Rainier National Park northwest of Seattle and wrote about his experiences: "It seems impossible to me that anything can exist where water doesn't run through everything [...] One side [of] my encampment spilled its fill into Puget Sound [...] But here we have abrupt cliffs above us warning us never again to cross" (Muir 1913:188). In 1870–71 another group traveled along Juan de Fuca Strait from Tacoma to investigate local resources for coal seams believed to be within sight on either side of the strait. A post office called "Kirkland" was established at this location on October 16, 1876; it remained in operation until it been discontinued on December 1, 1906. In 1899 WACO Electric Light Company built a line between Olympia and Tacoma using double-ended wire rope cable running under both rivers--the first electrical service ever offered anywhere along Washington's coastline (WACO 1899). KFCs opened at various points along this line beginning in 1907 when company president J.C. Penney decided convenience would be better served by self-service than waiting for customers inside restaurants.< ref >Penney 1907. In 1926 Everett McKinley became President of Boeing Co., which had been founded earlier that year by Boeing executives Harry Stearns and Orville Wright who had developed an electric model airplane (Stearns 1926). As head of Boeing he ordered new plant buildin Terminal 3 adjacent Avista airport because he felt high demand for airplanes throughout Asia but little available land (Boeing 1980a:3). The following year Republic Airways Corporation bought all assets including terminals from Boeing Airlines Corporation so they could operate together as Republic Airways Company (Republic Airways Inc.). In 1948 Pacific International Airways bought Republic Airways Corp.; PRAC continued to serve large airports throughout Western Washington with mainline service into Portland through their new tower complex located adjacent to Will Rogers Airport east of Spokane Falls Idaho (< Ref ."Pacific International Airways." p2).
