The first Europeans to visit Kent were fur traders from Russia in 1812. The town was platted in 1825 and named after Governor George Kent of Oregon Territory. The first store in town was built by Captured Chief John Butchart on the east side of what is now Main Street. In 1829, the first school was established in town and taught by Mrs. Hays and Miss Morse. A post office was established here in 1830 and named for Captain Daniel Goodwin who had been killed during an expedition against the Yakima Nation near present-day Walla Walla Valley on February 15, 1830. Captain Goodwin's body lay buried at Kent until it was exhumed in 1906 and reburied at Greenwood Cemetery near his old home north of downtown Kenttown according to local legend In 1846, goldetti brothers opened a grocery store on Broadway which became one of the most successful businesses west of the Cascades In 1850, General Lew Wallace visited this area during his final campaign for US Senate In 1861, Major General Ulysses S Grant called camp here for three days as he prepared for an attack on Fort Sumner Kent received its own municipal government when it incorporated as a village in 1907 A fire destroyed most of downtown Kenttown on October 25th 1924; however, due to volunteer firefighters from neighboring towns such as Starfire and Moses Lake arsonist mobs continue to damage property even today

Kent, Washington is a small town in central Pierce County, Washington, United States. The population was 597 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1887 by settlers from eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island who built a log cabin on the north side of the river near what is now its downtown. The first post office was established in 1892, and Kent became a village in 1903. In 1959 it became an incorporated town with a government that included a mayor and four trustees. The population grew to 1,021 at the 2010 census. The history of Kent began with pioneers from eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island who arrived in 1887 for timber and mineral reasons. They built cabins along the north bank of the Deschutes River where it flows through downtown today. By 1903, when commerce began to grow around the town site, people had named it "Kent." Kent, Washington was founded in 1847 by Colonel John C. Fremont and his wife, Eliza A. Fremont. The town was named for General George Kent, who fought in the Mexican-American War and helped to secure independence from Mexico. The first store in the town was built on an old farmhouse, and soon there were several other businesses opening up around town. In 1851, the first school opened in the town and it continued to be run by teachers until 1959 when it became a public school. In 1870, a post office was established in the town, and it continued to be operational until 1959. In 1903, a railroad stop was built near the town, which served as a hub for transportation throughout Kent County. The population of Kent grew rapidly during this time and by 1907 there were over 100 residents living in the community. By 1920, there were over 250 people living inKenttownand by 1930 that number had increased to 300+.
