In 1978, Port Royal Marina reopened as one of America’s oldest commercial fishing ports after being closed by Congress during World War II due to wartime munitions storage difficulties at nearby Point Defiance Naval Air Station (now SeaTac Airport). Today, Port Royal Marina is one of Kennewick’s most popular tourist attractions with its historically significant vessels and exhibits including a replica USS Constitution Museum shipyard and harbor complex dating back to 1827. As America entered into World War II, many resources were requisitioned for military use including salt water fisheries that could not be produced onshore due to hostile local Native American tribes raiding inland villages for food supplies.. After hostilities ceased on September 2nd 1945, much cargo still remained un unloaded at naval bases throughout the Pacific Northwest which required months or even years ofwait before it could be loaded onto merchant ships destined for Japan or other parts of Asia. Thousands of tons of Marine Corps equipment and materials ended up stranded along coastal WA shores during this time period dubbed “the warpora”

It is part of the greater Seattle metropolitan area and is home to Boeing's (BA) Flight 757 manufacturing plant. Kennewick is noted for its natural beauty, including its many lakes, rivers and ponds. The town was founded by settlers in 1853. The first post office in Kennewick was established in 1854. In 1886, Kennewick became a city and retains that designation to this day. The early residents were farmers who grew wheat, barley and potatoes in their gardens or fields; later they built houses from logs or used plows to cultivate land that now includes over 20 acres of forested hills and meadows. Today, Kennewick is a vibrant community with an active cultural life including art galleries, music venues and theaters as well as professional sports teams including the Seahawks (NFL), Sounders FC (MLS) and United States Lacrosse Association’s Washington Warriors lacrosse team. The engineering plant operated by Boeing until it closed in 1991 left a lasting legacy on Kennewick: six miles of arterial street are still named after employees who worked at Boeing during its heyday - most notably Paul Revere Way which runs between Boeing Field and Northgate Center mall while also serving as a bypass route for locals shopping at Best Buy store on First Hill Road nearby; today only one building from that era remains extant: Northgate Center mall itself which has been replaced by more contemporary buildings since then but the name lingers among local residents as one of their favorite landmarks

Kennewick, Washington is a town in Richland County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,980 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wenatchee–Tacoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kennewick was founded in 1881 by George Armstrong Custer and his family. It is named for General John Custer. The first permanent settler in Kennewick was Samuel Worthington who arrived in 1851. The town was platted on December 17, 1881 by George Armstrong Custer and his father-in-law Judge James Kapp with the name of "Wenatchee", after the Chief's daughter who had been born near Olympia,Washington Territory on November 30th of that year. The post office at Kennewick began serving August 15, 1882; it continued operation until it was discontinued on October 4th, 1907. The first store opened in 1886 under the name of "Benton's Store". By 1890 there were ten stores in Kennewick with a population of 2200 people. By 1900 there were twenty-four stores with a population over 6500 people and fifteen churches including one Episcopal church which played an important role in early settlement and development of this community as well as its adjacent townships (see below). The growth and development of Kennewick paralleled that of Wenatchee which also experienced rapid growth during this time period due to repeated gold rush discoveries along the Snake River Valley from Tacoma to Yakima Counties between 1861 and 1871 inclusive (see: Gold Rush Towns & Settlements). When those rushes ended some two decades later most businesses closed or changed hands while others such as mercantile enterprises flourished; especially because transportation costs were lower then than they are now making it easy for these ventures to succeed even when competition is fierce across geographic boundaries etcetera making what started out as small villages into large metropolises over time often referred to as Anglo Americanization process albeit wrought unevenly among various racial/ethnic groups within their respective regions etcetera resulting ultimately in increased social mobility within those communities during this era etcetera giving rise today to what has come to be known locally as "the Kennedys" or simply "the locals." The Kennewick area was first settled by the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in 1898. The land was donated by John D. Rockefeller and his wife, Katherine, to the government of Oregon. In 1943, the United States Congress passed the Organic Act which made it illegal to farm produce without using natural methods. With this law in place, many farmers abandoned their land in the Kennewick area and began to lease it from the Forest Service. In 1954, a dam was built onthe Columbia River near present day Kennewick and its waters were diverted into Lake Washington. This event created a large reservoir which eventually became part of Puget Sound National Park. Since 1967, when Kennewick became an incorporated town, much development has taken place in the area including new homes, businesses and schools.
