The history of the Coast Guard in Kelso dates back to 1887 when the first men were hired to help protect the sea lanes. The Coast Guard has grown steadily over the years, and today provides essential coastal defense and maritime services. The Coast Guard's mission isto provide safety on our coasts, and ensure that commerce can flow freely through our waters. Today, the Coast Guard rely heavily on donations from individuals, business owners, and organizations across Washington State. Donations from people in Kelso support a variety of programs including law enforcement work on beaches and inland waterways; Search and Rescue; public education projects; disaster relief; charitable contributions; as well as many more specialties. Kelso is a town in Kittitas County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Kelso is located on the Kittitas River. It has a post office with ZIP code 99834 and an agricultural center with five miles of trails and two dozen businesses. The school district that serves Kelso is Kittitas Valley School District #2. The Kittitas River was once a major route for trade between Puget Sound and the Great Lakes region. Today, it provides water for the town's small irrigation system as well as transportation to local farms and homes. Kittitas Valley School District #2 which serves Kelso was established in 1923 when the Kittitas River valley became available for education purposes following construction of the Mount Rainier National Park road system. The first students were enrolled in what is now kindergarten through 12th grade in 1923-24 through generosity of Mrs. Anna Hutton (present day Superintendent of Schools). In 1924, the first high school opened its doors with grades 7-12; it was called Friendship High School until 1959 when it became Kelso High School after merger of two other schools in Kittitas County - Friendship CentralHighSchool and Friendship East High School (now CenturyLink Center). In 1969, KVSD #2 merged with nearby Lakeview Elementary to form one large school district serving both pre-kindergarten through 8th grade as well as 9th-12th grades; this action also united all these schools under one roof making it easier to manage finances and improve communication among staff members who had been divided among various institutions over time. In 1994, KVSD #1 lost its status as a separate school district due to budget constraints which forced it to merge wit neighboring Moxee Elementary & Middle School districts; this act also unified these schools under one roof making it easier to manage finances and improve communication among staff members who had been divided among various institutions over time When families moved from Kelso or when there were no new students added during those years, notches were left on sidewalks along Route 99 just outside of town so that residents could notify authorities if there was anything wrong without having to leave their property . That tradition continues today where every August 4th evening around sunset someone posts an ankle watch on one end of Main Street near Soapstone Creek Bridge - just east of Interstate 5 across from town limits – letting everyone know what’s going on in case something happens while they’re out getting milk or eggs . There have been several incidents where people have broken this rule but so far nobody has been caught . People here are used to our community policing style .

The town of Kelso, Washington was founded in 1877 by James Ewing. The town grew quickly due to the natural resources that were available in the area. Kelso became a busy commercial and agricultural center during the early years of its existence. In 1925, Kelso was incorporated as a city and has continued to grow since then. Today, Kelso is a thriving community with a strong economy that relies on education, agriculture, and natural resources.
On July 4, 1876, Kelso was incorporated as a city by an act of the Washington Territorial Legislature. The City of Kelso was named for General George Armstrong Custer and his regiment, the Seventh Cavalry. The original plat of the city was made on December 12, 1875 and it included a schoolhouse and three lots on which trees had been planted. The first election to municipal government took place on January 6, 1877. On March 3rd of that year, the first mayor was elected with 33 votes against 2 cast for John Ahern. Kelso experienced growth during its early years as an agricultural community with small businesses located along Second Street between North Main and East Gay Streets. By 1898 there were over twenty businesses in operation in downtown Kelso with a population of about 350 people. In 1905 the millinery district reached its peak commercial activity with ten stores selling lace, hats, bonnets and other ladies' clothing items. The Great Depression hit Kelso hard in 1933-1934 with many businesses closing their doors including four mills which closed their production that year alone; one due to strikes; two due to fire; one due to vandalism; while another three lost their licenses because they could not meet required safety standards set by state regulators. However despite some difficult timeskelso flourished through World War II when military barracks were built downtown and thousands of local residents worked in munitions factories throughout Northern America A new library was built in downtown Kelso in 1949 after being funded by anonymous donors who believed that "the community's libraries should be accessible to all". In 1963-1964 the old library building at Fourth and Third Streets was replaced by a new one which is still used today as the Municipal Building annexe. In 1969-1970 changes were made to zoning regulations within town limits making it easier for developers to build high rise buildings near shopping centers thereby enhancing property values adjacent to these developments while also increasing development pressure on surrounding neighborhoods which resulted in some displacement of residents or loss of jobs
