The first post office in Kelso opened on October 15, 1883 (the date of the town's incorporation). The building still stands and is used as the town hall today. In 1907, postmaster George Cramer moved to Kelso from Everett and started receiving mail at his house until it reached its peak in 1912 when he built a new annex on Second Avenue that remained operational until 1951. In 1913, telephone service began operations in Kelsoville with two phones per household. By 1922 there were twelve telephones per household with five lines available for use within each house. In 1924, wired transportation became available to residents when the state leased three buses to run between Seattle and Everett daily; this allowed easier access to jobs outside of town while keeping people connected within their own community.
