The Kelso Army Depot was established in early 1945 and became operational in October of that year. The depot served as an important source of materiel for the United States Army during World War II and then again during the Vietnam War. It is now a part of the military community in Kelso and continues to be used by the U.S.Army as well as other agencies. With a population less than 1,000 residents at that time, duties performed by this depot were easily consolidated with those located adjacent at Lewis & Clark AFB . By 1951-1955 only small arms Ammunition consistedOf projectiles not grenades or mortar rounds; rifle ammunition also came through here but principally through Lewis & Clark AFB . As tensions mounted domestically (and abroad), ammo needs increased rapidly; therefore personnel staffing levels decreased even more so resulting in some equipment being stored unoccupied for years! However Commanding General staff ordered all equipment remaining un Fortressified after September 1955 be moved into new facilities north west side Of town! From 1951-1957 “Fortressification” occurred at Kenedy County Depot consist entirelyof caliber 553A2 M1 Garands Rifle Rounds while Machine Guns remained unfortified/ inside Fortress (See map opposite) A major change took place following Korean Conflict when large numbers OF Artillery Ammunition started flowing into America via our open sea ports because North Korea refused to sell their stockpiles back to us!!!!!! Consequently total inventory now stands At over 400 Million rounds!!!!!
