Issaquah is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 29,711 at the 2010 census. Issaquah forms part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Issaquah was Nicholas Saratoga in 1851. He homesteaded land on the south side of Lake Washington and named his community after himself and his father-in-law Moses Saratoga. The town's first post office opened in 1853. By 1861, Issaquah had a school, churches, stores and residences. In 1871, an act by the Washington Legislature designated Issaquah as an incorporated village with its own government. The village became one of five townships within King County when it was organized on February 17, 1907; it lost its independent status in 1911 when King county consolidated with Seattle to form the larger city of Seattle. In 1906–07 George Custer fought in World War I while serving with the US Cavalry Regiment (Hemispherical Company A) 8th U S Infantry at Belle View Ridge near Issaquah; he died from wounds received there two weeks later on December 14th at age 23 years old. Custer's remains were repatriated to America following his death and are interred at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington Dc.. His battle badge is also commemorated at Belle View Ridge where a plaque acknowledges him as "a hero" to many residents today who know about him from that location only thanks to research done by local historian Don Armstrong over 30 years ago! Today's downtown core includes shops and restaurants along much of First Avenue South between SW 5th Street and SW Montgomery Street; east of First Avenue South lies Pioneer Square which has several dozen locally owned businesses including Safeway Super Markets - one of three anchors - Jamba Juice/ Panda Express - Regal Cinemas - Starbucks - Dunkin' Donuts - Half Price Books & More...
